SUGIMOTO HIROSHI

INTERVIEW AT NYC STUDIO

Hiroshi Sugimoto (杉本博司) is a renowned Japanese photographer and architect known for his profound exploration of time, memory, and perception through art. His work spans photography, sculpture, architecture, and performance, often blurring the lines between reality and illusion.

He has been widely recognized for his artistic achievements, receiving several prestigious awards over the years. These include the Hasselblad Award in Photography in 2001, the Praemium Imperiale in Painting in 2009, the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2010, and the title of Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2013. He was also honored with the Isamu Noguchi Award in 2014 and the Centenary Medal from the Royal Photographic Society in 2017. His works are held in major art institutions around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery in London.

I spent several days shooting at his studio in Chelsea, New York, where he was incredibly generous with his time - granting an in-depth interview about his work and vision, and even entertaining me with his remarkable, opera-style singing.

Shot on lacation in New York City (USA).
